London is an incredible city, but like any major tourist destination, there are a few overrated spots that you can safely skip in favor of something better. If you want to avoid crowds, overpriced attractions, and tourist traps, here’s where not to go – and where to go instead.
Leicester Square – A Soulless Tourist Trap
If you like chain restaurants, overpriced popcorn, and a bunch of American candy stores that make no sense, Leicester Square is your place. Otherwise, skip it. The international food brands and casinos don’t offer anything unique, and the crowds make it one of the least enjoyable areas in central London.
Instead, go to: Chinatown, Soho, or Mayfair. Just a few steps away, you’ll find authentic Asian cuisine in Chinatown, from dim sum to bubble tea. Soho offers a mix of quirky bars, independent restaurants, and a thriving nightlife scene – with actual character. If you’re looking for upscale dining and luxury shopping, Mayfair is the place to be, offering Michelin-starred restaurants and high-end boutiques.
Camden Market – It’s Not What It Used to Be
Once a hub for alternative culture and independent stores, Camden Market has become a victim of rising rents and commercialization. Today, it’s mostly packed with overpriced tourist souvenirs, cheap clothing, and mass-produced trinkets. If you’re looking for something unique, you won’t find much here.
Instead, go to: Camden Passage in Islington. This charming street is lined with independent boutiques, vintage shops, and cozy cafes. It still has that London market feel but without the tacky mass-produced souvenirs.
Oxford Street – The Worst Shopping Experience
If your idea of shopping fun is shuffling through massive crowds just to visit stores you can find in every major city in the world, then sure, go to Oxford Street. It’s mostly global brands, and the experience is more exhausting than enjoyable.
Instead, go to: Marylebone high street. It’s a short walk away but feels like a different world – quieter, filled with boutiques, independent bookshops, stylish cafes, and great restaurants. It’s an upscale but relaxed shopping experience.
Westminster Bridge & London Eye – Pickpocket Central
Westminster Bridge is one of the worst places for pickpockets, and the London Eye, while iconic, is overpriced and often comes with long wait times. The view is nice, but there are better ways to take in London’s skyline.
Instead, go to: The Sky Garden. It’s one of the highest viewpoints in London, and the best part? It’s completely free. Just book a time slot in advance and enjoy stunning views over the city with far fewer crowds.
Other Things to Do in London
If you want a richer, more enjoyable experience, here are some alternatives:
- Afternoon Tea – Skip the tourist-heavy ones and book a table at a smaller, more traditional tea spot like Fortnum & Mason or The Goring Hotel.
- Theatre Shows – The West End has world-class productions, but if you want something different, check out The National Theatre or Shakespeare’s Globe.
- Live Music – London has incredible venues for music lovers. Try Ronnie Scott’s for jazz, The Roundhouse for indie gigs, or one of Soho’s legendary basement bars for something intimate.
- Museums – Many of London’s best museums are free! The British Museum, National Gallery, and Tate Modern are must-visits.
- Neal’s Yard – A hidden gem in Covent Garden, this colorful courtyard is packed with independent cafes, restaurants and shops, perfect for a quiet escape.
- Borough Market – One of the best food markets in London, offering incredible street food, artisanal products, and a buzzing atmosphere.
London is an amazing city, but skipping the obvious tourist traps can make your experience so much better. Venture just a little off the beaten path, and you’ll discover the true charm of the city.
